The Winter Blues

So, who has The Winter Blues? I used to have them but now, due to two reasons, not so much in fact I celebrate the six months we spend in drizzle, rain and the cold.

Reason one : My Mum told me when I was a teen that British ladies had much better skin than those in sunny countries because that big ball of fire 93 million miles away from our back garden aged our skins and we should feel sorry for them!  Admittedly this was said while booking our family holiday in Wales and not Spain where my friend Karen was going with her family. But she was right, its true, so the next time you look up and moan, think of your skin and how that dull sky is actually doing you a favour. Reason Two: As I’ve aged, I’ve come to the realisation I look better with my clothes on than off, so the more clothes I need to wear, the merrier! Especially those black opaque tights that make my legs look like they used to before something happened to my knees!

As I am currently (and will be for some time to come) in a mess due to kitchen renovations. Soup and stew dishes are a God send so we are diving into ours this week and taking notes.

Also I am loving us all going nuts for nuts. I am a big nut fan and in every kitchen I’ve owned since the early 90’s there is always a large nut jar standing proud on the counter. In it will be a cocktail of different nut types so when you scoop a handful out its a nut explosion: pistachio, almond, brazil etc then for an extra kick I add dried fruits sultanas, raisins, cranberry’s.

I friend of mine who knew Mark independently of me popped round to his house just before we moved in together. She said; “I could tell you were planning on staying with him because a big nut jar had arrived on his kitchen counter” – Yes, it truly was a sign! But outside of the fact I love nuts they are a great way of detracting us from the biscuit tin and any other naughties hanging around the kitchen. I avoid the biscuit tin by eating a healthier small scoop of nuts, it removes the craving and actually satisfies me for longer. I even have a plastic container with my nut mix in that sits in the car, so when the peckish thoughts arrive in my head instead of popping into a service station and coming out with a packet of crisps or sweets, a slug of water and a handful of nuts fixes the problem.

I’m determined to go on a trip to the Norwegian Fiords, it’s on my list for this year and definitely going to take my Dad on a river cruise to see them. I know from the pictures and watching films they are stunning.  Also, the added upside is, the weather will be fresh, we’ll be wrapped up in layers of warm clothes and in the evening out will come my black opaque tights. Warm and glam all the way!
