What a lovely travel piece we have this week.

What a lovely travel piece we have this week.

Wonderful, Wonderful Copenhagen and in my 14th year on this planet, it was. Up until 1974 I’d never been on a plane but in this year of my teenage life all was about to change. Dad, who’s company ‘Turner and Son’s’ made display cabinets for Wedgwood’s Pottery, had a business trip to the famous Daell’s Department Store, Copenhagen and as a treat I was allowed to tag along.

You can only imagine the innocent excitement, a new outfit, probably involving purple, (Donny Osmond’s favourite colour) and the best bit..  I was allowed a lip gloss!

To this day, I love going to an airport and with a nod to comfort I still dress up. I have a vivid memory of Birmingham airport, the glamour of the British Midland staff and when on the plane and taking off feeling elated, this was the ride of my life.

The Danish will always have a place in my heart especially their Hygge, translated it means wellbeing, the Danish way to live. Did you know they have a ‘Happiness Research Institute’ there and Denmark consistently ranks among the happiest nations in the world. If you would like to know more about Hygge the book I recommend you pick up is by Meik Wiking called ‘The Little Book of Hygge’.

I use its teachings in my own life, but I’ll warn you it does involve; decluttering, simplifying, cozy throws, cushions, candles, fires, fresh air, cleanliness, light, space, less is more, (3 things on a shelf can be better than 8), cosy food sharing, but most importantly, community, family and friends.

Which brings me to our cookery item on soup. I love soup if I have the time, I make my own, best way to do a fridge clear out. We’ve all made ‘Fridge Soup’ knowing that no 2 will ever be the same, but don’t forget if in a rush ‘Soup Pimping’. I picked up a shop bought one recently, used it as a base, doubled its quantity by adding extra roast peppers, garlic, herbs, tomatoes and delicious bone broth made out of a left over chicken carcase.

As it’s all in the presentation, I poured mine into a big bowl with a finely grated mound of Parmigiano on the side and a basket of baked thinly sliced crispy french bread.

These are always a winner, work best with stale bread which you crisp up by generously coating with olive oil before placing on a baking sheet in the oven

When people say “Delicious, homemade soups are the best” You can either own up, stay quiet, or say “Hmmm they are, would you like some more?”

How can Twiggy be 75?! I looked up to her and followed Twiggy’s career, so she’s an amazing front cover for us to enjoy. The enduring thread running through her life philosophy is, scrub up, show up, look after people and work hard. Happy Birthday Twiggy you are an inspiration to us all!
